PLEASE NOTE: This article is for earlier versions of Ubuntu running on Gnome 2.x, so will not work in Unity (the default desktop environment) or Gnome Shell, both of which are based on Gnome 3.
To backup your Gnome Panel settings, run the following command in a terminal:
--dump /apps/panel > ~/Settings/panel_settings
To restore your last saved Gnome Panel settings and refresh the desktop, run:
--load ~/Settings/panel_settings && killall gnome-panel
Note that the commands assume you have a “Settings” folder inside your user folder where the file “panel_settings” will be saved.
